Epigenetic regulation refers to the functions of genes based on the change of non-DNA sequence, which finally leads to the biological pleiotropic phenotype. Epigenetic regulators are involved in almost all plant growth and development by directing gene expression at multiple levels. In this paper, the main types and molecular mechanisms of plant epigenetic modifications, such as DNA methylation, histone modification, RNA methylation, chromatin remodeling, non-coding RNA, gene imprinting and maternal effects, as well as their action mechanisms and biological functions in cell proliferation, cell differentiation, biotic and abiotic stresses, flowering, fruit maturation and embryo development were reviewed while their applications in agriculture were finally prospected.
